Rock Crawling
Rock crawling is an extreme off-road sport where everyday vehicles to highly modified vehicles drive through and over obstacles. These highly modified vehicles can be anything from trucks, jeeps, and buggies. This sport is all about precise and slow speed driving.
It is all about passing the impassable. Rock crawlers often go up and over objects that look like there is no way to do it. There are many rock crawling events out there from local competitions to national series. Each competition is set up to a 200 yard long obstacle course that is set up with gates like a slalom ski course.
Phil Howell, who is the sport of Rock Crawling originator, developed the points system that is used in these competitions. He created the team which consisted of a four- wheel drive vehicle, one driver, and one navigator which is known as the spotter. Teams would be penalized with points for hitting navigational markers on the course that the vehicle would drive through.
They would also be added points for putting the vehicle in reverse and for using a winch to help them get forward progress through the course. The winners would then we awarded by the lowest score and there are also harder, optional lines in which the teams can attempt to get awarded bonus points.
There are all kinds of events now that take place in which amateurs and professionals can attempt to win. It is a fast growing sport and has been featured on numerous television shows out there. It is challenging and yet a blast to do and will continue to push off road enthusiasts to the limit.
