Concrete and Rigid Plastic Liners
Medium density polyethylene is another liner that is becoming more popular with koi keepers. It can be welded on site to create both formal and informal designs. Although capable of bending, MDPE is not flexible in the same way as butyl rubber sheeting.
Discuss the degree of informality possible with the company offering to build the pond. MDPE has a firm smooth surface that can be easily brushed clean. Providing you choose the correct type of bottom drains, surface skimmers and pumped return pipes, thus eliminating the need for gaskets and screws.
Whether you choose butyl rubber sheeting or MDPE, subject to soil type there may be no need to block or brick up the hole first, although many pond builders so this as well. Either way, it may be a good idea to install bottom drains into a concrete base to prevent movement.
If the hole is not blocked up, then install a concrete collar. What about a concrete liner? Although not popular with many koi keepers, a rendered concrete pond is another alternative. Although a sunny spot is ideal from the point of view of the warmth it provides, the pond is likely to suffer from algal bloom.
Because concrete does not easily adhere to itself, the pond must normally be cast in one go. However, if glass fibers are added in the correct proportions when mixing, the concrete can be layered and will have extra strength to resist cracking.
Different fibers manufacturers may recommend differing building techniques, so do consult them before starting to build. Bottom drains, skimmers and other pipe work must be placed in position before the pond is cast.
Once rendered, concrete ponds must be sealed in some way to prevent alkaline chemicals leaching into the water when the pond is full. Various products are available that can be painted onto the surface, either to neutralize or seal it.
