Gymnastic Hoop – How the Experts Use it to Perform a Sequence
Of particular importance when creating a sequence is the change of plane of the apparatus; this is a major factor for consideration with the hoop because of its bulkiness.
There must be variety in the use of different planes, indeed this is stated in the judging rules, and it is worth spending time in devising and practicing suitable linking movements so that the change from one plane to another can be performed without interruption to the flow of the movement.
This can be achieved in the following ways:
1. Stop the motion of the hoop and check it in a suitable pose or balance position, then recommence in a different plane
2. Turn the body through a quarter of a turn, so changing the hoop from the wheel to the door place, or vice versa.
3. Release the hoop, i.e. let go of it by throwing, rolling or spinning, and collect it with immediate change of place.
These three factors also apply to plane changes with other apparatus and by ensuring that each plane is used, you will automatically include a variety of apparatus manipulations.
For the throw in the wheel plane, the arm is placed in a forward diagonal position rather than a true sideways position to enable an easy and controllable action. It is essential that the arm is fully stretched both during the preparatory rotation and for the throw itself, and that you have a strong follow through of the arm on the release.
It is not necessary to swing the arm violently or to bend it to achieve a good high throw, a gentle lowering and lifting of the arm will do. The catch is more difficult in this position because of the backward spin of the hoop, and the hand needs to reach inside the hoop at the lower front edge if the rotation action is to be continued.
Alternatively, try a simple over grasp catch bringing the hoop down at the side with a swing.
