Gymnastics Moves – What You Need to Know About Swing in the Wheel Plane – Part 2
Once you have mastered this simple swing and so got the body, feet and rope moving, as well as the hand changes, it is easy to link it with some skipping. With an end in each hand, according to which way the rope is swinging, take it into:
1. Forward or backward skipping
2. Half time or single time skipping
3. On the spot or traveling skipping
4. Combinations of the above.
Alternatively, once the rope is folded and both ends are in one hand, take the swing into a full circle at the side of the body, in either a forward or backward direction, or on both sides of the body, alternatively right and left to form a figure of eight type movement.
This can be combined with a body wave or a balance or can travel with a chasse step. To become more adventurous, the full circle can be taken into a throw. Initially this is best done with the rope circling backwards at the side of the body, the arm held extended and slightly forwards, in front of the body pointing diagonally forwards.
The movement should be quite gentle and controlled. Once the rope is swinging, using a wrist action lower the arm slightly and then raise it upwards to release the rope when the arm is stretched to a forward and diagonally upward position.
The rope will rise into the air in a folded shape, but it will open out, and the two knots will separate so that you can catch it again with one end in each hand. Do not throw the rope too vigorously as this will cause it to over rotate.
In fact, the rope needs to turn over only once as this makes the catch easier and it can be followed immediately by a forward skip. Remember what was said earlier about stretching up with the arm and following through on the throw, and also reaching up with both arms to catch the rope as early and as high as possible.
