How You Should Fail Before You Succeed – How Failing Will Make You Successful

It’s a sad fact that so many people who have started out in business give it all up quicker than they started, just because they have failed in something new. Think about how you would feel – you have a great business idea, you have put a lot of time, effort and expense into it and it fails miserably – falls flat on its face and is a disaster. However, how would you deal with this failure? If I told you that failing was an essential part of succeeding in business, you would probably think I’m crazy but its how you deal with your failures and move on from them that is the important part.

The single most important part from failing is to learn from your mistakes. Analyze your failures and ask yourself the following questions:

• Why have I failed

• What were the contributing factors to my failing

• What could I have done differently

• Can I get help to rectify my failure

These questions are not set in stone and there are others but if you can look at these and find answers to them, then you will go a long way into knowing why you have failed. Knowing the reasons behind why you have failed in business are of course, only half the story. The really important part is how you actually move on from failing.

Many people simply cannot handle failure and give up altogether but this need to necessarily be the case. These types of people feel like complete failures, they lack confidence and self belief and they can become withdrawn and more reluctant to try again for fear of failing a second time around.
It is essential you know how to handle failure in the right way should it come your way and actually work failing to your advantage.

My attitude towards failure is that I think to myself “well, at least I have given something a try – okay, it hasn’t worked out but I’ll learn from my mistakes, pick myself up and have another go doing things differently”. You will be a stronger person in business for it but only as long as you have analyzed your failure and learned the lessons from it.

You should never ever let criticism get you down. No one should ever criticise you for trying and if you fail, so what, at least you have had the courage to try in the first place which is more than what many other people would do. Let me tell you, provided you have given it your best shot, there’s no shame in failing. Nothing in life is handed to you on a silver plate and at if you fail in business, at least you can hold your head high and say you at least gave it your best.

I cannot stress enough the importance of learning from your mistakes and failed ventures enough. Provided you have taken time out to re-evaluate your failings, these findings are what will ultimately make you a far stronger person and you will be much more likely to succeed in the long term. Take your failings and make them work for you.

You are highly unlikely to get it right the first time around and failure is almost an inevitable part of business. You have to accept this and prepare for it. I would be quite sure that even the most successful people in life have failed along the way at some stage. However, those who have gone on to be a major success in business are those who have dealt with failures and made their failings work for them. They have learned the hard way and kept going at it, learning all the while and not making the same mistakes twice.

Think about this – how many failures do you think John Logie Baird had along the way before he succeeded in inventing the television? How about Alexander Graham Bell – do you think he perfected the telephone first time? Of course they didn’t. They never got it right first time and failed countless times along the way. However, they learned from their mistakes, moved on from them and persisted until eventually they got it right and became successful.

The obvious point here of course is to try to minimize your risk of failing in the first place.
